Timpani

Dresden and Chain timpani built by me, about 1968, and refurbished by Mark Guthrie in 2004. Now in the possession of Mike Crusoe-Seattle Symphony Orchestra.

Road Setup

This is a studio picture of one of my “road set-ups”. They’re very portable and original and fit into one suitcase. A close examination will reveal the double beater and tilting hi-hat device. Used on the recording TO SING.

Hummers / Hyper-Tabalums

Hummers: Wooden headed drums with resonant objects attached to greatly extend the resonance.

Hyper-Tubalums: Narrow tubes with regular drum heads long enough to suggest an echo as the sound travels the total length from 10 – 25 feet.

Early Instruments

My early instruments include: Sprahng, Aqua-Lips, Koto-veen, Hysterine, Petite Titons, X-R Drums, and Random Rhythm Generator. This group was used for a tenth anniversary performance for the New Music Circle, (1970).

Clowns

Things aren’t always as they seem. A group of instruments, in gaudy attire, to disguise that they’re made of PVC sewer pipe. Although they look like “only” drums, they each have resonate devices attached to their heads to significantly alter the sound. Besides striking them, some may be played like a Cuica, shaken or scraped.
